With the development of new energy Warehouse Equipment, the motors used by different Material Handling Equipment are also different. At present, it is more common to be divided into AC motors and DC motors. So what is the difference between these two motors in work? Today we come to share relevant knowledge together.

 

An AC motor is a machine used to realize the mutual conversion of mechanical energy and AC electrical energy. Due to the tremendous development of AC power systems, AC motors have become the most commonly used motors. Compared with the DC motor, the AC motor has a simple structure, is convenient to manufacture, and is relatively firm because there is no commutator (see the commutation of the DC motor). It is easy to make a motor with high speed, high voltage, high current and large capacity. AC motor power covers a wide range, from a few watts to hundreds of thousands of kilowatts, or even millions of kilowatts. In the early 1980s, the largest steam turbine generator had reached 1.5 million kilowatts.

 

A DC motor defines a rotating motor whose output or input is DC electrical energy, called a DC motor, which is a motor that can realize the mutual conversion of DC electrical energy and mechanical energy. When it operates as a motor, it is a DC motor, which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy; when it operates as a generator, it is a DC generator, which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.

What are the benefits of using an AC motor for an Electric Forklift?


Compared with the DC motor, the AC motor has a simple structure, is convenient to manufacture, and is relatively firm because there is no commutator. It is easy to make a motor with high speed, high voltage, high current and large capacity.

 

1. The motor is maintenance-free for life

The electric forklift using the AC drive system, the overall performance is significantly improved, the failure and component replacement rate is significantly reduced, and the reliability is greatly enhanced; the forklift has higher productivity per unit time, lower operation and maintenance costs, and will bring very significant benefits to users . Therefore, once the AC drive system is launched, it is not only trusted by forklift manufacturers, but also more and more favored by users. It has become the trend and direction of the development of electric forklift technology in recent years. Its advantages are mainly reflected in the following aspects: low operation and maintenance costs. The AC motor is maintenance-free for life. The AC motor does not need a reversing commutator (forward and reverse commutation), saving parts. More importantly, the AC motor has no carbon brushes and commutators, which not only makes the motor smaller and lighter, but also improves the running speed, and completely gets rid of the trouble of regular inspection and replacement of carbon brushes. The advantages of this are: the forklift motor does not need maintenance for almost a lifetime, which greatly enhances the reliability and stability of the forklift; at the same time, there is no need to consider reserving space for motor maintenance in the design of the forklift, and the motor can even be sealed to make The structure design of the forklift is more compact.

 

2. Regenerative braking

Wear Reduction Regenerative braking is a non-contact braking that is much simpler than conventional braking systems. Regardless of whether the driver brakes by stepping on the brake pedal or switches the driving direction to brake, the motor will be in the state of generator, and its electromagnetic torque will become the torque of the braking nature. This means that the wear on the brake pads is reduced to a minimum. The mechanical wear is greatly reduced, which reduces the maintenance cost of the forklift and makes the operation cost lower. At the same time, the AC motor is more efficient in driving and braking. When braking or reversing, regenerative energy is generated. The harder the brakes, the more energy is regenerated. The energy storage device of the AC drive system will automatically start when braking or reversing, and return the energy to the battery, so that the battery can work longer and have a longer life. Although regenerative braking is also available on some DC drive forklifts, it must be activated when braking hard, which also means that some of the regenerative energy is converted into heat during braking. In almost all cases, the AC motor will generate energy regeneration and continue to function until the forklift is completely stationary, which is obviously more efficient than the DC motor.

 

3. Accelerate faster and improve efficiency

The high speed of the AC motor is much higher than that of the DC motor, and the power is stronger. Moreover, the AC motor can feed the obtained regenerative energy back to the battery, which not only prolongs the battery life, but also uses the energy to improve the overall performance of the forklift. The result is faster start-up on the move, greatly improved acceleration/deceleration performance, and reduced time to high speed and travel distance. Studies have shown that in most practical applications, the distance of a forklift from starting to stopping is rarely longer than 20m. The excellent acceleration performance of the AC motor makes it possible to realize the full-speed operation of the forklift in such a short distance, and the working efficiency of the forklift is significantly improved.
